Environment and Wildlife Investigations Team
We investigate animal trafficking and ecosystem destruction through open sources. From exposing vloggers persistently posing with wild and vulnerable animals, to identifying a stranded barge at the centre of a major oil spill, to monitoring the scale and speed of extreme weather events such as wildfires and floods, we aim to uncover some of the threats facing our natural world.
Our investigations draw on digital footprint tracing combined with geolocation to identify illegal wildlife traders, ship-tracking data paired with satellite imagery to follow fishing boats and oil tankers, and large public databases to map long-term patterns.
We also publish practical guides outlining our methods: detecting marine oil slicks, charting raw climate data, and using LLMs to support geolocation tasks.
